Putting
- Lesson 3
Following
an Efficient Warm Up Routine
This lesson will:
| 1. |
Show
you how to define your own pre-round
putting warm up routine to use before
every round. |
| 2. |
Provide
a sample warm up routine to use as
a starting point. |
Defining Your Own
Pre-round Warm up Putting Routine
Before every round of golf
you play, you’ll need to practice
your putting in order to develop a confident,
comfortable stroke for that particular
day. Your warm-up routine should be one
that builds confidence and improves your
“feeling” of the putter and
the greens you are about to play on. From
one day to the next, your putter won’t
necessarily feel the same way to you and
neither will your stroke. Even more dramatic
can be the difference in the speed and
movement of the greens. Luckily, courses
generally attempt to setup the practice
green similarly to what you will find
on the course. Your challenge before every
round then is to use the practice green
to “find” your stroke for
that day and develop an understanding
and comfort for the type of greens you’ll
be putting on.
The best way to do
this is to perform a routine very similar
to that you should already be familiar
and comfortable with, your 10-minute routine
from lesson 1: Effective Practice. The
following is a slightly modified version
of the practice routine:
|
Taking
your normal putting stance and grip,
make 10 smooth putting strokes WITHOUT
a ball. Concentrate completely on
making a smooth stroke, with good
tempo. |
|
With a ball, make that
same stroke 10 times. Do not be concerned
with direction or distance. Simply
focus on making a smooth stroke and
making solid contact with the ball. |
|
Make 10 strokes with
a ball aiming at the fringe of the
green. Worry only about the stroke
and distance of the putt. Vary the
length of the putts. |
|
Make 10 strokes to
a hole. Do not change the point at
which you are putting from. This will
help you to “read” the
green and focus completely on the
feel of the putt. |
|
|
Use the rest of your
practice time trying to make putts
from all different points. Take the
time to read the line of the putts
and go through a complete putting
routine for each one. |
To define this warm up routine,
use the My Training system.
The My Training system
allows you to define your entire pre-round
warm up routine. This particular lesson
addresses only the portion of your pre-round
routine that will sharpen your putting
skills and prepare you for your work on
the greens.
| Step
1: |
Login in
to the site and go to My Training. |
| Step 2: |
In the My Routines
box, select Warm Up Routine. In the
My Warm Up Routine box, select Edit
Routine. |
| Step 3: |
Complete the form by
entering the steps to your pre-round
putting warm up routine. |
|
10 smooth
putting strokes WITHOUT a ball. WITH
a ball, make that same smooth stroke
10 times. |
| |
Make 10 strokes with
a ball aiming at fringe (distance
only). Make 10 strokes with a ball
aiming at hole (from same spot). |
|
5 minutes of putting
to hole from different spots, starting
close and moving further away. Go
through pre-shot putting routine each
time. |
Remember, there are two
important objectives to your pre-round
putting warm up routine.
| 1. |
Develop
a feeling of comfort and confidence
in your stroke for that particular
day. |
| 2. |
Develop
a feeling of comfort and confidence
in the speed and movement of the greens
you are about to play that day. |
If you focus on those things
and achieve them, you are ready for your
round. Don't be afraid to experiment with
different things in your routine in an
effort to most effectively achieve those
goals. Everyone is different, and only
you will completely understand what works
best for you.
